Every legendary group has an origin, and A Bond of Necessity serves as the perfect, unglamorous introduction to the characters of “The Veilguard.” Before they were well-known across the land, these heroes were simply individuals from wildly different walks of life. Thrust together by circumstance, this diverse cast is forced to collaborate to resolve a deadly issue with a mysterious monster. It is a classic dark fantasy setup, but one that is executed with a refreshing sense of grounded realism that immediately pulls you into the world.

Reading this book feels exactly like sitting in a dimly lit tavern, listening to patrons spin wild, overblown theories about a famous group of heroes, only for a shadowy figure in the corner to interrupt and tell you what actually happened. It reads as though an old, retired member of the Veilguard is finally setting the record straight, offering a backstory that feels wonderfully more mundane and authentic than the grand myths surrounding them. This narrative style gives the origin story a gritty, conversational weight that makes the characters feel instantly human rather than untouchable legends.

My only real complaint about the book is simply that I wished it hadn’t been quite so short. However, as a novelette, it respects the reader’s time and absolutely refuses to drag. Roussety manages to pack an incredible amount of story, character development, and thrilling action into a very limited page count. The pacing is tight, ensuring that the initial team-up of these future heroes feels both earned and genuinely exciting, acting as a brilliant hook for the rest of the series.

Ultimately, this is a wonderful start to The Veilguard Chronicles and highly worth the minimal investment of time it requires. Because it is a shorter read, it serves as a nice, easy introduction for anyone curious about the universe. If you are a fantasy reader looking for an action-packed origin story—and aren’t strictly limited to cozy fantasy—this is an excellent addition to your reading list that will leave you eager to see what this group accomplishes next.
