A Masterpiece of Rational Madness: Reviewing Dear Mr. Boyd

Dear Mr. Boyd by H. M. Mast
Genre: Gothic horror | Rating: 5/5

There is no mystery about who committed the crime in Dear Mr. Boyd. Right from the jump, the main character openly admits to murder in a letter written to a lawyer from behind prison walls. Instead of relying on a shocking whodunit twist, the book operates on a uniquely captivating premise: a pleasant, chillingly calm mix of actual text from her letters and vivid narrative recollections of past events. She isn’t trying to hide her guilt; she is simply, methodically explaining her reasoning, pulling the reader directly into her confined and shadowed world.

What makes this book so spectacular is the genius slow roll of the protagonist’s mind. Watching the main character devolve into psychopathy should feel jarring, but the narrative is crafted so meticulously that her descent feels completely understandable and, shockingly, reasonable. The prose guides you step-by-step through her twisted logic until you find yourself nodding along with her choices. It’s an incredibly delicate psychological balancing act, and the author nails the execution without ever losing grip on the mounting dread.

I was admittedly a little concerned at first about how short the book was. When a premise is this heavy, you usually expect a sprawling psychological thriller. However, it turned out to be the exact right length for the progression of the story. The pacing is slow and highly intentional, ensuring that the tension builds exactly as it needs to, yet it is never padded with unnecessary prose. Every word serves a distinct purpose in painting the portrait of a fracturing mind. Since I picked this up on Kindle Unlimited, the only investment required was a bit of my time—and the payoff was massive.

This is a quick, masterful read that absolutely respects your time. The ideal reader for this is anyone who appreciates meticulous, character-driven gothic horror and loves the intimacy of an epistolary format. If you need explosive action or prefer your villains to be entirely unsympathetic monsters, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you are fascinated by the dark, quiet corners of the human psyche and want to see a character’s unraveling handled with terrifying rationality, this is a must-read.
