Homecoming by Adam Myles — Spoiler-Free Review
Excerpt: A slasher-style horror novel with small-town dread, razor-sharp pacing, and gore that absolutely commits—plus a genuine “no one is safe” sense of risk.
- My rating: 5/5
- Genre/vibe: Horror (slasher) — Fast-paced • Gory • Haunting • Mystery-forward
- Best for: Readers who love slasher momentum in prose and can handle visceral, detailed violence.
- Content notes: Explicit gore; visceral, gut-churning descriptions of death/violence.
Quick, Spoiler-Free Premise
From the opening scene, you’re stepping into a small town where something is deeply wrong—and it’s only going to get worse. As deaths begin to rock the community, the story keeps a tight grip on the central question: is this a curse clawing its way out of the past… or something far more sinister?
What Worked for Me
- Pacing that refuses to let go — Every time you think you’re getting a breather, the story tightens again. It’s controlled, not chaotic, and it knows exactly when to push and pivot.
- Visceral horror that earns the content warning — This is gory in a fully committed way: not vague, not sanitized, and not something to “try anyway” if you’re squeamish.
- “No one is safe” done right — The book doesn’t rely on obvious character armor, so the risk feels real and the tension stays high.
What Didn’t Work for Me
I didn’t have any notable complaints.
The Moment That Stayed With Me (Still No Spoilers)
That repeated pattern of thinking you’ve reached a breather—only for the book to tighten the screws again, like a horror soundtrack that keeps building even in “quiet” moments.
Who I’d Recommend This For
- Readers who love slasher movies and want that same momentum in a book
- Anyone who enjoys horror that’s graphic and unafraid
- People who like mysteries where fear comes from not knowing what’s behind the deaths
- Readers who want a story that hooks early and doesn’t let up
Who Might Want to Skip It
- Readers who avoid explicit gore or detailed descriptions of death
- Anyone who prefers slow-burn, atmospheric horror over sharp, escalating action
Final Thoughts + Rating
5/5. I had no complaints—just that satisfied, slightly unsettled feeling you get after a horror story that does exactly what it promised. The opening hooks you, the pacing keeps you trapped, the mystery stays active, and the brutality is delivered with full commitment.

A Question for Fellow Readers
What’s the last horror novel that delivered exactly what it promised (and in the best way)?
