If you’ve looked around a sanctuary lately and wondered where everyone went, you might want to check the rain-slicked alleys of your favorite low fantasy novels. The silent, absent gods of modern urban fantasy are starting to look a whole lot like the empty pews of 2026.
Over on my author site, I recently dove into the rising trend of speculative fiction acting as a safe haven for spiritual deconstruction. We are seeing a massive cultural shift—readers and listeners of deconstruction podcasts are flocking to gritty, grounded magical worlds. Why? Because high fantasy’s gleaming castles and infallible pantheons don’t reflect the modern search for truth. Low fantasy, with its moral gray areas and hidden corruption, mirrors our reality perfectly.
The 3-Step Deconstruction of Frank Hess
Deconstruction isn’t just a theological buzzword; it’s a grueling, three-part narrative arc. You can see this exact process mirrored in the mechanics of The Spirit Saga:
- The Unsettling Realization: The moment you realize the system you trusted is flawed. In The Observer, Frank Hess is thrown into a spiritual ecosystem he doesn’t understand. Initially, he looks to his Guide, an entity named Michael, for absolute truth. But quickly, the cracks show. The “good guys” operate on a need-to-know basis, and Frank is decidedly kept in the dark.
- The Dismantling: Taking the machine apart to see who is actually pulling the levers. Frank has to survive a resource-based economy where Observers and Demons alike feed on human energy and influence. He has to strip away the religious-sounding jargon of the spiritual realm to see the raw, transactional nature of the hierarchy.
- The Gritty Rebuild: Finding a grounded, authentic purpose in the rubble. Frank isn’t trying to sit on a throne or fulfill a grand, cosmic prophecy. He’s an everyday guy trying to navigate a terrifying, non-linear spirit world solely to protect his family. He rebuilds his understanding of the universe around that single, grounded truth.
Finding Truth in the Dirt
When institutions falter and the designated “Guides” in our lives turn out to have hidden agendas, the epic becomes intensely personal. Deconstruction is a messy, uncomfortable process—it’s back-alley brawls with your own beliefs, not a choir singing in perfect harmony. Low fantasy resonates right now because it gives us permission to question the architecture of the divine from the ground floor.
It reminds us that even if the system is rigged, the everyday fight to protect what you love is still worth it.
Your Turn to Dismantle
Have you ever had a “Frank Hess” moment where you realized a trusted system, institution, or mentor wasn’t giving you the whole truth? How did you begin to navigate the gray areas?
If you’re ready to dismantle a few spiritual hierarchies of your own, step into the gritty reality of The Observer and join the investigation.
