Meet the Characters of The Spirit Saga: Frank

Are you looking for a new urban fantasy reluctant hero to root for? Meet Frank Hess, the protagonist of The Spirit Saga. Unlike traditional chosen ones who embrace their destiny, Frank is a man who died and simply wants to go home.

In the realm of urban fantasy, the reluctant hero trope is often about refusing the call. Frank doesn’t just refuse it; he fights back against the Gods themselves. If you enjoy characters who challenge the system, check out The Observer to see Frank’s origin story. You can also follow me on TikTok for more content.

The Dossier

In the world of Urban Fantasy, heroes usually seek out adventure. Frank Hess just wanted to go home.

Frank represents the urban fantasy reluctant hero. He didn’t ask for power, and he didn’t want to be drafted into a cosmic war. When he wakes up in the afterlife, he is stripped of his memories and physical form, left with only one driving emotion: the desperate need to protect his family.

However, the afterlife has rules, and Frank seems born to break them. Unlike most Observers who are passive “guardian angels,” Frank is a battering ram. He possesses a latent, unexplained ability to manipulate spirit energy that baffles his mentors and catches the attention of the ruling Gods.

Why You’ll Love Him

Frank grounds the high-concept fantasy of The Spirit Saga in reality. He reacts to the afterlife exactly how you would: with confusion, anger, and a lot of sarcasm. He isn’t fighting for glory; he is fighting because the system is keeping him from the people he loves.

“I’m tired of this bullshit! You either tell me what I need to do to help them right now, or release me and let me figure it out for myself!”
Author’s Note: Frank is the embodiment of parental anxiety turned into a superpower. I wrote him to answer a question: If I died today, what would I be willing to destroy to make sure my kids were safe?
