Every hero needs a mentor, but few get one quite like Michael. In the lore of urban fantasy, the spirit guide is usually a wise, elderly sage who speaks in riddles. Michael is different. He is a 4,000-year-old entity trapped eternally in the body of a teenage boy.
Michael subverts the typical urban fantasy spirit guide trope. He uses sarcasm, pop-culture references, and theatrics to mask the burden of his immortality. If you want to see how he handles a student like Frank Hess, pick up The Observer today. You can also follow me on TikTok for deep dives into the magic system Michael teaches.

The Dossier
Michael is the Virgil to Frank’s Dante—if Virgil was a sarcastic 17-year-old with a love for dramatic entrances.
Michael died four millennia ago, which means he is eternally trapped in the body of a teenager. But don’t let the boyish charm fool you. Michael is one of the most powerful entities in the afterlife, hand-picked by the Gods to train new spirits. He serves as Frank’s mentor, explaining the complex mechanics of Auras, Time Travel, and Spirit Combat.
Why You’ll Love Him
Michael is the comic relief, but he is also the heart of the lore. He uses humor to mask the pain of losing previous students and the burden of knowing too many secrets. His dynamic with Frank shifts from teacher/student to a chaotic “buddy cop” duo that drives the series.
“I didn’t forget about the restraint… I just love theatrics.”Meet Michael in “The Observer”
