Unhinged Side Quests in Space by R. Thompson
Genre: Space LitRPG | Rating: 5/5
If you thought a bureaucratized fantasy quest system was bad, wait until you see what happens when the chaos blasts off into the cosmos. Unhinged Side Quests in Space takes our wonderfully chaotic trio—Dix Quickthumb, a screaming map, and opinionated dragons—and thrusts them into a universe where an all-powerful system has decided that chaos must die. Reality is actively glitching, swearing has been deemed illegal, and customer service has literally been weaponized against our heroes. It is a fantastic, chaotic premise that perfectly sets the stage for a sequel filled with terrible choices and relentless absurdity.
Reading this book is an unpredictable slurry of reality-bending nonsense, and I mean that in the absolute best way possible. Following in the spirit of the first installment, Thompson takes the madness that defined the original and dials it up to eleven. However, the true brilliance of this book lies in a surprisingly masterful balancing act. It continues to wildly push the boundaries of absurdity—yes, including the unforgettable introduction of dick dragons—while somehow simultaneously hitting incredibly thoughtful, philosophical beats.
Amidst the hilarious, breakneck battles to save chaos itself, the narrative reveals a remarkably sharp allegory for individual freedom and the dangers of censorship. It is a rare feat for a story to make you laugh at something completely crude and unhinged one moment, only to have you genuinely pondering the nature of free will the next. That delicate balance is what makes this sequel so memorable, proving that the author can deliver profound messages without ever compromising the breakneck speed and calculated wrongness that makes the prose so uniquely engaging.
Ultimately, this is another crazy, five-star ride, but it absolutely requires doing your homework first. Because the narrative dives straight in and assumes you already understand the established relationships, quirks, and dynamics between the characters, you definitely need to read the first book before picking this one up. If you are a returning fan ready to embrace the madness and fight back against a sterile, heavily censored universe, this sequel is a beautifully unhinged must-read.
