The First Sin by E.D. Yates — Spoiler-Free Review (Indie Author Challenge 2026 #8)
Excerpt: Perfect for the reader that wants to mix Christian mythology with dark and sinful spice.
- My rating: 5/5
- Genre/vibe: Adult Romantasy — Spicy • Sex-forward • Vampires • The Devil
- Best for: Readers wanting Christian mythology mixed with dark, sinful spice.
- Content notes: Sex, blood, gore, violence.
Quick, Spoiler-Free Premise
Eden, the eldest daughter of Adam and Eve, is seduced by Satan (called Lucien in the book) and turned into the world’s very first vampire. As Lucien continues to claim what he says is his, another comes along to stake his claim as well, despite his mission to kill her. The story spans from creation to the modern day, and the spice is front and center the whole time.
What Worked for Me
- The spice level is high—you are almost never more than a few pages away from the next sexual encounter.
- The writing is very descriptive and lyrical, extending beyond just the spicy scenes.
What Didn’t Work for Me
- It is a decently long book for a Romantasy; while it isn’t filled with fluff, the length was a hurdle initially.
The Moment That Stayed With Me (Still No Spoilers)
I knew I was getting into a romance book going in—and I’m not normally a romance reader—but right from the beginning, the vivid descriptions drew me in immediately.
Who I’d Recommend This For
- Romantasy lovers.
- People okay with a bit of irreverent handling of Christian figures.
- People who appreciate flowing prose.
- People who don’t mind a little (or a lot) of blood mingled with their spice.
Who Might Want to Skip It
- People who don’t care for graphic descriptions of sex and gore.
- People who wish to avoid depiction of Christian figures outside of the Biblical canon.
Final Thoughts + Rating
5/5. This story spans eons, mixing vampires, the Devil, and high-heat romance. The prose is descriptive and lyrical, ensuring the length feels earned rather than fluffy. Even for someone who doesn’t typically read romance, the writing style makes it an engaging experience.
